Louis Valtat was a pioneering French painter whose vibrant, expressive style helped bridge the gap between Impressionism and the modern movements of the early 20th century. Valtat played a crucial role in the development of Fauvism, working in parallel with and even anticipating some of the well known Fauve painters such as Henri Matisse and André Derain.

Valtat’s style drew from a variety of influences—including the Pointillism of Paul Signac and the color experimentation of the Symbolists—but ultimately became uniquely his own. His work is notable for its joyous use of color and light, often inspired by the Mediterranean landscapes of southern France. Common subjects in his paintings include harbors, still lifes, floral compositions, and intimate domestic scenes.

The piece is framed with a hand painted frame in two pink tones and with a berry outer edge, with light passepartout, and placed on a dark plum background.
