Original lithographic print with art by Pablo Picasso from edition from 1993 of the book Toros y Toreros.

Toros y Toreros (Spanish for Bulls and Bullfighters) is a richly illustrated book originally published in 1961 by Éditions Cercle d’Art in Paris. The book is a unique collaboration between art and the world of bullfighting — a theme that held a lifelong fascination for the artist Pablo Picasso.

Picasso created a remarkable series of drawings and lithographs specifically for this project. They reflect his deep and complex interest in bullfighting, which he saw as both a cultural ritual and a metaphor for life and death. The drawings are expressive, often stark, and full of symbolic energy.

The author of the book Luis Miguel Dominguín was a legendary Spanish bullfighter. He was at the height of his fame in the 1950s and 60s and was a friend of Picasso, and it was this friendship that sparked the book’s creation. Later George Franck translated Dominguín’s Spanish text into French, making it accessible to a wider European audience.

The piece is framed with a hand painted dark navy frame, dark green passepartout, and is placed on a dark blue blue background.
