Calder was an American artist who revolutionized modern sculpture by inventing the mobile and creating monumental stabiles.

He moved to Paris in the late 1920s, where he created his famous miniature performance artwork, Cirque Calder, and gained renown as the "king of wire" for his playful wire portraits and animal figures.
